Yosemite Valley was home to the Ahwahneechee people for millennia before it was drawn into the California Gold Rush frontier in the 1850s. Alarm at early exploitation led Abraham Lincoln to sign the 1864 Yosemite Grant, protecting the valley and Mariposa Grove — a landmark act that helped seed the entire national-park idea.
