Ancient stone village near the roof of the Caucasus
Xınalıq (Khinalug) is one of the highest and oldest continuously inhabited villages in Azerbaijan, clinging to a mountainside at around 2,300 metres in the Quba district of the Greater Caucasus. Stone-and-mud houses stack up the slope so that one home's roof serves as the next one's terrace. The isolated community speaks Ketsh — the Khinalug language, an unwritten tongue found nowhere else — and lives largely from sheep herding beneath dramatic Caucasus peaks.
Habitation here is said to span thousands of years, and extreme isolation — a paved road reached the village only around 2006 — preserved the unique language and customs. The seasonal migration route of Xınalıq's shepherds and its cultural landscape were inscribed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site in 2023.
