Remote fishing village near the Belize border reef
A tiny village at the southern tip of Quintana Roo, close to the Belize border, with a small harbor for fishing and dive boats. It is the jumping-off point for the Banco Chinchorro atoll. Infrastructure is minimal and the pace is slow.
Xcalak grew as a fishing settlement and was once a customs point on the Caribbean coast. Hurricanes, notably in 1955, devastated the town and it never returned to its earlier size.
