South Australia's steelworks town sits on the eastern shore of upper Spencer Gulf, with a regional airport and a port that ships iron ore and steel. The surrounding gulf waters draw anglers chasing snapper and cuttlefish.
Founded in 1901 as a tramway terminus for iron ore from the Middleback Range, it grew around a shipyard and steelworks during the twentieth century. The naval shipyard built corvettes during World War II.
