North-coast capital of the Sepik region
The coastal capital of East Sepik Province in Papua New Guinea, set on a hilly peninsula with beaches and offshore islands. It has an airport and a harbour that serve as the gateway to the Sepik River cultures inland.
A major Japanese base during World War II, it saw heavy fighting and was the site of the Japanese surrender in New Guinea in 1945. It later became the administrative centre of the Sepik.
