Vinalhaven is an island town in Penobscot Bay reached by state ferry from Rockland. Its harbor supports one of Maine's largest lobster fishing fleets.
The island was a major source of granite in the 19th century, quarried and shipped to build public buildings across the country. When the granite trade faded, lobstering became the mainstay.
