Road's end in Patagonia — the last village on the Carretera Austral, hemmed by icefields with no road onward to Argentina
Villa O'Higgins is a remote village of a few hundred people at the southern terminus of Chile's Carretera Austral (Route 7), in the Aysén region of Patagonia. Founded in 1966 and named after independence hero Bernardo O'Higgins, it sits close to the vast Southern Patagonian Ice Field. There is no road onward: travellers continuing to El Chaltén in Argentina must cross Lago O'Higgins by boat and then hike or cycle a rough trail over the border. The village is a base for viewing the O'Higgins Glacier and some of the wildest, least-developed country in Chile.
The area was settled slowly through the 20th century by Chilean pioneers and remained almost inaccessible by land until the Carretera Austral finally reached the village in 1999. Its isolation, harsh climate and ice-field geography have kept the population very small and its economy centred on ranching and, increasingly, adventure travellers passing through.
