A tiny civilian village on the Antarctic Peninsula
A small Chilean settlement on King George Island in the South Shetlands, off the Antarctic Peninsula — one of only a handful of places on the entire continent with civilian families rather than only scientists. Built beside the Frei air base, it has a school, a bank, a post office and a chapel, with a population that dwindles to a few dozen through the winter.
Chile established Villa Las Estrellas ('Village of the Stars') in 1984 as part of its long-standing presence and territorial claim on the Antarctic Peninsula, deliberately including civilian families to demonstrate a permanent community. Argentina's Esperanza base is the only comparable civilian settlement on the continent.
