Ventura (officially San Buenaventura) is an unpretentious beach city on the Southern California coast between Los Angeles and Santa Barbara. Its walkable downtown along Main Street mixes thrift shops, taquerias and craft breweries around the 1782 Mission San Buenaventura, while the wooden Ventura Pier and long sandy beaches draw surfers and strollers. The harbour is the main departure point for boats to Channel Islands National Park, one of the least-visited national parks in the U.S.
Ventura grew around Mission San Buenaventura, the ninth and last California mission founded by Junípero Serra in 1782, on land long inhabited by the Chumash people. The town boomed briefly with an oil discovery in the early 20th century, and its Main Street retains early-1900s buildings alongside the restored mission. Today it trades on its low-key surf-town character — a quieter, more affordable coastal stop than its glossier neighbours.
