The capital of El Hierro, the smallest and most remote of the main Canary Islands, and unusually the only Canary island capital set inland rather than on the coast. It has an airport, while ferries dock at the port of La Estaca.
El Hierro was once considered the western edge of the known world, and an old meridian passed through it. The island is now noted for its efforts toward renewable-energy self-sufficiency.
