Valdez is a small port town at the head of a fjord in Prince William Sound. It is the southern terminus of the Trans-Alaska Pipeline and has Valdez Airport for regional flights.
Founded during the 1898 gold rush as an alternative route to the interior, the town was rebuilt on higher ground after the 1964 Good Friday earthquake. The pipeline terminal opened here in 1977.
