Cluster of medieval tower-villages under Mount Shkhara
Ushguli is a community of stone villages at around 2,100 metres in Upper Svaneti, high in the Georgian Caucasus, and among the highest continuously inhabited settlements in Europe. Dozens of medieval Svan defensive towers (koshki) rise from the hamlets beneath Mount Shkhara, Georgia's highest peak at over 5,100 metres. Snowbound and often cut off in winter, it is a magnet for trekkers in summer and part of a UNESCO-listed cultural landscape.
Svaneti's stone tower-houses, mostly built between the 9th and 13th centuries, sheltered families during clan feuds and raids, and the region's isolation preserved the distinct Svan language, icons and half-pagan Christian traditions. Upper Svaneti was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996, and the small medieval Lamaria church stands above Ushguli.
