The northernmost inhabited island in the British Isles
Unst is the most northerly inhabited island of Shetland, and thus of the whole British Isles, closer to Norway than to mainland Scotland. Its windswept moors and dramatic sea cliffs hold the country's northernmost point, rich Viking heritage and vast seabird colonies.
Unst was a major Norse landfall, with one of the highest densities of excavated Viking longhouse sites anywhere; replica longships and a longhouse recall that heritage. At its northern tip the Muckle Flugga lighthouse, built by the Stevenson family, marks the edge of Britain.
