A treeless, volcanic island community of around 4,200 in the Aleutian chain, where the adjoining Dutch Harbor is consistently one of the busiest fishing ports in the United States by volume. It is the base for the pollock and crab fleets made famous by 'Deadliest Catch.'
Home to the Unangax (Aleut) people for millennia, Unalaska became a centre of the Russian fur trade in the 1700s. In June 1942 Japanese forces bombed Dutch Harbor and later occupied nearby islands, making the Aleutians a WWII battleground.
