City of birches on the Ume River
Umeå lies on the Ume River near the Gulf of Bothnia, served by Umeå Airport and a nearby ferry port at Holmsund linking to Finland. It is northern Sweden's largest university city.
After a fire destroyed the town in 1888, it was rebuilt with wide, birch-lined avenues to slow future fires, giving it the name 'City of Birches.' It was a European Capital of Culture in 2014.
