A city on the Volga with a river port and a large aircraft-manufacturing industry. It has two airports, including Ulyanovsk Vostochny.
Founded as Simbirsk in 1648, it was renamed Ulyanovsk in 1924 as the birthplace of Vladimir Lenin. It later became a centre of Soviet aircraft production.
