Pearl city of the south
Tuticorin, officially Thoothukudi, is a port city in southern Tamil Nadu with its own airport and a major deep-water seaport. It has long been associated with pearl fishing and salt production.
The port was a centre of pearl and pilgrimage trade held successively by the Portuguese, Dutch and British. It grew into one of India's designated major ports after independence.
