Turtuk is one of the northernmost villages open to visitors in India, tucked into the Shyok River gorge in the far reaches of Ladakh's Nubra Valley, only a few kilometres from the Line of Control with Pakistan. Unlike the Buddhist character of the rest of Ladakh, Turtuk is a Balti Muslim village — its people speak Balti (a Tibetan dialect), the call to prayer echoes across the valley, and the culture, food and architecture belong to the historic region of Baltistan. Turtuk lay within Baltistan, on caravan routes linking Ladakh to Skardu and Central Asia, and belonged to Pakistan after Partition. In the 1971 Indo-Pakistani War the Indian army advanced up the Shyok valley and took Turtuk and a handful of neighbouring villages; overnight their Balti residents became Indian citizens, and many families were left divided across the new Line of Control, unable to freely visit relatives a short distance away. The village remained a restricted military frontier zone and was only opened to tourism in 2010.
