Türkmenabat is an eastern Turkmen city on the Amu Darya River, a hub for cotton and transport between Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan. It has an airport and river port access.
On the site of the ancient oasis of Amul, it was a Silk Road crossing point on the river. It grew as a railway town under the name Chardzhou before being renamed.
