Turkistan is a historic city in southern Kazakhstan centered on the UNESCO-listed Mausoleum of Khoja Ahmed Yasawi. A newer international airport now serves growing tourism.
A major spiritual and trading center on the Silk Road, it flourished under Timur, who commissioned the great mausoleum in the late 14th century. It was long the seat of the Kazakh khanate.
