Silk Road pilgrimage city of the great Yasawi mausoleum
Turkestan (Turkistan) is a historic city on the steppe of southern Kazakhstan, long the spiritual heart of the region. Its centrepiece is the vast Mausoleum of Khoja Ahmed Yasawi, a 12th-century Sufi poet and mystic, whose tomb was rebuilt on a monumental scale by Timur (Tamerlane) at the end of the 14th century and left deliberately unfinished. Once so revered that pilgrims called it a 'second Mecca', the city today is a regional capital that has been heavily restored with a new tourist complex around the old citadel.
Ahmed Yasawi (c.1093–1166) founded an influential order of Sufism, and after his death the site became a major pilgrimage destination. Around 1389–1405 Timur ordered a grand mausoleum built over the grave, crowned by the largest brick dome in Central Asia; scaffolding marks on the unfinished main portal remain visible. The city later served as a capital and burial place of the Kazakh Khanate.
