A mighty castle above the Váh, and the only Roman inscription in Slovakia
Trenčín is a town in western Slovakia set on the Váh River, dominated by one of the country's largest castles perched on a rock above the old centre. Below the fortress, a compact historic square is ringed by burgher houses and a Baroque plague column. On the castle rock, carved just above the Hotel Elizabeth, is the oldest dated inscription in Slovakia — a Roman legionary carving from 179 AD.
The rock was fortified in the early Middle Ages, and beneath it survives a Roman inscription left in 179 AD by soldiers of Legio II Adiutrix marking a garrison at 'Laugaricio' during the Marcomannic Wars — the northernmost such Roman record in central Europe. The castle grew into a powerful medieval stronghold, most associated with the 14th-century magnate Matúš Čák, who ruled much of the region almost as an independent prince. A devastating fire in 1790 damaged the castle, which was later restored and now houses a museum.
