Tofol is the administrative center of Kosrae, the easternmost state of the FSM, served by Kosrae International Airport and small harbors. The island is heavily forested with fringing reefs and mangrove channels.
Kosrae was an independent island society before contact with whalers and missionaries in the 19th century, and passed through Spanish, German, Japanese and US administration. The ruins of Lelu, a stone-walled royal settlement, lie nearby.
