A Baja desert-meets-Pacific artist town and Pueblo Mágico
Todos Santos is a small town on the Pacific side of the Baja California Sur peninsula, roughly an hour north of Cabo San Lucas, where the desert runs down to long surf beaches. A designated Pueblo Mágico, it has an old sugar-mill core of brick and adobe buildings now filled with galleries, cafés and boutique hotels. Palm-fringed and laid-back, it draws surfers, artists and travellers looking for a quieter alternative to Los Cabos.
Founded as a Jesuit mission settlement in the early 18th century, Todos Santos later grew wealthy in the 19th and early 20th centuries on sugarcane, with several mills operating around the town. When the freshwater spring feeding the plantations faltered in the mid-20th century, the sugar economy collapsed and the town emptied. From the 1980s onward foreign and Mexican artists began restoring its historic buildings, and its arts scene and Pueblo Mágico status revived the town.
