Bathurst and Melville Islands, north of Darwin, home to the Tiwi people — a culture distinct from the mainland, with its own language, art and football-mad community. Known for vivid ochre painting, carved pukumani burial poles and screen-printed textiles, the islands welcome visitors on permit-based, Tiwi-run day tours.
The Tiwi lived in relative isolation from mainland Aboriginal groups, developing a unique culture centred on kinship, the Kulama yam ceremony and elaborate mortuary rites. The islands became Aboriginal land held by the Tiwi Land Council.
