Tivat's naval significance dates to the Venetian Republic (14th–18th centuries), which established the Arsenal (Lazaret) at Tivat as a maintenance and provisioning depot for the Venetian fleet in the Adriatic. The Arsenal's stone buildings (now the Porto Montenegro complex) represent 400 years of Venetian and Austro-Hungarian naval history.
