Thunder Bay sits at the head of Lake Superior, a major grain-shipping port and the western end of the Great Lakes seaway, served by Thunder Bay International Airport. The Sleeping Giant peninsula frames its harbor.
Formed in 1970 by merging Fort William and Port Arthur, the city grew as a fur-trade rendezvous and later a grain and rail terminal. Fort William was a key North West Company post.
