A riverside town in central Laos on the Mekong, opposite Nakhon Phanom in Thailand. It is a river port and the starting point of the popular Thakhek Loop through limestone karst country.
Thakhek grew as a French-era trading post and retains some colonial-era buildings around its central square. The surrounding karst hills hold extensive cave systems, including the long Konglor Cave.
