East Greenland's largest town, ringed by fjord and ice
The biggest community on Greenland's remote east coast (~2,000 people), set on Ammassalik Island above a sheltered harbour and hemmed in by mountains, glaciers and the drifting sea ice of the Denmark Strait. It is a hub for dog sledding, small-boat trips into Sermilik Fjord, and hikes into the wildflower-filled 'Valley of Flowers'.
The east coast of Greenland was one of the last inhabited regions of the Arctic to be contacted from the outside — the Danish explorer Gustav Holm reached the Ammassalik area by umiak in 1884 and found an isolated Inuit population living largely as they had for centuries. A trading post was established in 1894, becoming the town now called Tasiilaq.
