Tarapoto is a city in Peru's San Martín region on the eastern Andean foothills, served by Cadete FAP Guillermo del Castillo Paredes Airport. It is a gateway to waterfalls, lagoons and cloud-forest.
Founded in 1782 by a Spanish bishop, it developed as an agricultural town in the upper Amazon basin. Roads in the 20th century linked it to the coast and spurred its growth.
