A town in southern Morocco where the Anti-Atlas meets the desert, a short distance inland from its Atlantic fishing port at El Ouatia (Tan-Tan Plage). It has a regional airport and hosts a well-known nomadic gathering.
Long a caravan and pastoral crossroads, the town became a marshalling point during Morocco's twentieth-century move into the south. Its annual moussem, a gathering of nomadic tribes, is recognized by UNESCO.
