Takoradi, part of the Sekondi-Takoradi metropolis, is home to Ghana's first deep-water harbour and a regional airport. It has grown as a centre for the country's offshore oil industry.
The harbour was built in the 1920s under British colonial rule, making Takoradi Ghana's earliest major modern port. It later merged administratively with the older town of Sekondi.
