The Surat Thani region was part of the Srivijaya maritime empire (7th–13th centuries) — the dominant maritime power in Southeast Asia, centred on Sumatra, that controlled trade between China and India through the Strait of Malacca. Archaeological finds of Srivijayan-era Buddhist statuary in the region confirm its importance to the empire's network.
