The tiny capital of the Falkland Islands, a cluster of brightly painted, tin-roofed houses around a sheltered harbour in the far South Atlantic. Home to around 2,500 people, it feels like a windswept corner of the British countryside set among peat moorland, penguin colonies and shipwrecks.
The Falklands have a contested colonial history between Britain, France, Spain and Argentina; Britain established permanent control in 1833. Stanley became the capital in 1845. In 1982 the islands were at the centre of the Falklands War between the United Kingdom and Argentina.
