Skardu is the main town of Baltistan in Gilgit-Baltistan, northern Pakistan, set at about 2,230m in a broad valley where the Shigar River joins the Indus. It is the principal staging point for expeditions into the Karakoram — including K2 (8,611m, the second-highest mountain on Earth), the Gasherbrums, Broad Peak and the Baltoro Glacier. The surrounding landscape mixes cold-desert dunes, turquoise lakes such as Upper and Lower Kachura, and the historic Kharpocho Fort above the river. The local Balti culture has deep Tibetan roots.
Baltistan was historically known as 'Little Tibet' and was ruled from Skardu by the Maqpon dynasty, who built Kharpocho Fort on the crag above the Indus. The region was contested during the 1947-48 war and became part of Pakistan-administered Gilgit-Baltistan. Balti, a Tibetan language written historically in a Tibetan-derived script, is still widely spoken.
