Greenland's second-largest town, a colourful cluster of some 5,500 people on the west coast just above the Arctic Circle. It is the country's fastest-growing town, a hub for dog-sledding, fishing and the start of the celebrated Arctic Circle Trail to Kangerlussuaq.
The Sisimiut area has been inhabited for around 4,500 years by successive Saqqaq, Dorset and Thule cultures. The modern town grew from the Danish colonial trading post of Holsteinsborg, founded in 1756.
