Gateway to Maramureș wooden churches and the Merry Cemetery
Sighetu Marmației is a market town on the Tisa river in the far north of Romania, right on the Ukrainian border and the main gateway to the traditional Maramureș region. Around it lie villages famous for towering wooden churches with shingled spires, painted gates, and some of the most intact folk culture in Europe — including the celebrated Merry Cemetery of Săpânța, where grave markers carry brightly painted portraits and cheeky rhyming epitaphs. The town itself was the birthplace of Holocaust survivor and writer Elie Wiesel.
An old salt-trading and market town, Sighet is also remembered for a grim chapter: its former prison was used under communism to jail and kill Romania's political, religious and intellectual elite, and now houses the Memorial to the Victims of Communism. Nearby, the Merry Cemetery was begun in 1935 by the woodcarver Stan Ioan Pătraș.
