Santander is the capital of Cantabria, set on a large sheltered bay on Spain's north Atlantic coast, with a port, a ferry link to Britain and its own airport. It has elegant belle-époque beaches and the modern Centro Botín art centre.
An old Cantabrian port, Santander became a fashionable royal summer resort in the early 20th century. A 1941 fire destroyed much of the medieval centre, which was rebuilt.
