Cocoa-export port on the southwest coast
Côte d'Ivoire's second-largest port, on the southwest Atlantic coast, shipping much of the world's cocoa alongside timber and rubber. It has a regional airport and beaches stretching west toward the Liberian border.
Purpose-built as a deep-water port in the early 1970s to open up the country's forested southwest, the city grew rapidly around cocoa and timber. It remains a key node of Ivorian trade.
