San Juan del Sur is a horseshoe bay town on Nicaragua's Pacific coast with a small harbor and cruise anchorage. It is a popular surfing and nightlife destination near the Costa Rican border.
In the mid-19th century it was a key Pacific terminus of Cornelius Vanderbilt's transit route carrying gold-rush travelers across Nicaragua. Fishing and tourism sustain it today.
