A town on a bay at the base of the Samana Peninsula in the northeast Dominican Republic. It has a nearby international airport and a harbor, and humpback whales gather in its bay during the winter breeding season.
The bay was long valued for its strategic harbor, drawing interest from several foreign powers in the 19th century. A community of English-speaking African-American migrants settled the peninsula in the 1820s.
