Salekhard is the capital of the Yamalo-Nenets region of northwestern Siberia, and the only city in the world lying exactly on the Arctic Circle — marked by a monument straddling the line. It stands where the Ob River meets the Polar Ural foothills, in a land of Nenets reindeer herders.
Founded in 1595 as the Cossack fort of Obdorsk, it was for centuries a fur-trading outpost at the edge of the Russian empire. In the Stalin era it was a starting point of the abandoned 'Dead Road', a forced-labour railway across the tundra that was never completed.
