Deep-water iron-ore harbour on the West Coast
A town on one of South Africa's finest natural harbours, on the West Coast north of Cape Town, exporting iron ore railed from the interior. Its sheltered bay and nearby lagoon draw watersports and support a mussel and oyster industry.
The bay was long prized for its shelter but lacked fresh water, delaying settlement. A twentieth-century ore terminal and rail line from the Northern Cape turned it into a major bulk port.
