Windswept beach town on Boa Vista's north coast
Sal Rei is the main town of Boa Vista island, fronted by a small harbor and a sheltered bay. Aristides Pereira International Airport lies just south of town, serving the island's beach resorts.
The town grew around salt trading and later fishing, and was long the island's administrative center. An offshore islet once held a fort built to guard against pirate raids.
