A fog-wrapped, treeless island in the Pribilofs of the Bering Sea, home to an Unangax (Aleut) community of a few hundred. Its beaches host the world's largest northern fur seal rookeries, and its cliffs teem with millions of nesting seabirds.
The Pribilof Islands were uninhabited until Russian fur traders in the late 1700s brought Unangax people from the Aleutians to harvest fur seals, effectively as forced labour. Sealing dominated life under Russian and then U.S. control into the 20th century.
