A town on the Maroni River in western French Guiana, on the border with Suriname, with a river harbor and pirogue crossings to the other bank. Its old penal-colony buildings still stand near the waterfront. It is a hub for river trips into the interior.
Saint-Laurent-du-Maroni was established in the 19th century as the reception camp for convicts sent to France's penal colony in Guiana, the infamous 'bagne.' The transportation of prisoners ended in the 1940s.
