Rovaniemi is the capital of Lapland Province with a population of 63,000, sitting directly on the Arctic Circle at 66°33'N. It is the northernmost city in the European Union and the official hometown of Father Christmas — Santa Claus Village, built directly on the Arctic Circle, draws 500,000 visitors annually from around the world. Rovaniemi developed as a market town for Sámi and Finnish traders along the Kemijoki and Ounasjoki rivers.
