A Polynesian island adrift far north of Fiji
A remote volcanic island of around 2,000 people roughly 465 km north of the rest of Fiji, of which it is a dependency. Its people, the Rotumans, have their own distinct Polynesian language and culture, quite different from the Melanesian and Indo-Fijian mainstream of Fiji to the south.
Rotuma was settled by Polynesians and long lay at a cultural crossroads with Samoa, Tonga and Fiji. It was ceded to Britain in 1881 and administered together with Fiji, becoming part of independent Fiji in 1970 while keeping a strong separate identity.
