Bay Island reef diving off the Honduran coast
The largest of Honduras's Bay Islands, ringed by coral reef in the Caribbean. Its capital Coxen Hole has an international airport and cruise ports, and the island is a well-known diving destination.
The island was inhabited by the Pech people and later used by English pirates and settlers in the 17th and 18th centuries. Britain formally ceded the Bay Islands to Honduras in 1859, and an English-speaking Afro-Caribbean culture remains.
