The 'Sultana of the Andes' beneath Ecuador's highest volcano
Riobamba is a highland city in central Ecuador, set on a plain at around 2,750m ringed by snow-capped volcanoes — chief among them Chimborazo, the highest mountain in the country. Nicknamed the 'Sultana de los Andes', it has a dignified centre of churches and squares and serves as the gateway to Chimborazo's slopes and to the celebrated Devil's Nose railway. Markets, Andean culture and mountain scenery define the city.
The original Riobamba was destroyed by a catastrophic earthquake in 1797 and rebuilt from scratch on its present site nearby. In 1830 the newly independent nation of Ecuador held its first constituent assembly here, making Riobamba briefly the country's first capital. The arrival of the trans-Andean railway in the early 20th century — including the switchbacks of the Nariz del Diablo — cemented the city's role as a commercial hub of the central sierra.
